Sending a "Not to Exceed" Check


Send this type of business or personal check to any place where you are requesting something that you don't know what the exact new cost or total costs will be. You can not send this type of check to any United States government office.

Fill in the following on your check: date, pay to the order of and signature. DO NOT FILL IN THE AMOUNT IN WORDS OR NUMBERS. Under the line that you leave blank for the amount in words, write "Not to exceed X dollars". Make the amount "X" a few dollars more than any present amount known for their specific services or make the "X" amount a reasonable amount that you wish to spend for copying or services or research.
