OVERVIEW

Where you place your family history depends on how much CONTROL you want with the data, features of other people's or company's Websites, your computer technical skills, or COMPLETE CONTROL if you make your own Website.

If less control is OK with you and you want to place your family history on other people's Website, read about some of them at this Website HERE. Read all features of the other people's or company's Websites. There can be many shortcomings.

Unless you have no computer database and want to add one person at a time into your database on a company's Website, you will have to do the things below.

You will need a computer genealogy program such as PAF, Family Tree Maker (FTM), RootsMagic or Legacy Family Tree to initially place all of your family history genealogy information.

Decide which persons you want on your family history Website.

Use the filtering features of your genealogy program to select only deceased persons. Exclude all persons born from 1914 to the present.

You will have to generate the HTML that is the Internet language database for your Website using your present genealogy program or another major genealogy program.

Make a GEDCOM of that filtered genealogy database using your genealogy program if you use a GEDCOM to HTML conversion program to generated the website HTML.

Optionally use an HTML editor to make changes to the title, format and other things.

Upload the newly made HTML family history database using a FTP program onto a Website.

Basic things about putting your genealogy on the web are at http://genealogy.about.com/od/publishing/a/online.htm

If you wish to construct a Web site you may learn how to by using the 3 Web site design links at the bottom of this page.

MY OBSERVATIONS

The fastest and easiest genealogy program to use to upload your HTML family history database onto the Internet is using the Family Tree Maker (FTM) genealogy program. With FTM comes the ability to upload your FTM database onto the Ancestry.com’s Website using your user name. Details about the uploading are at http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5039∓mp;mp;p_created=1256746099 The disadvantages are that you must buy FTM and are working with somebody else's Website or URL and see ads.

The RootsMagic versions 4 and 5 but not 6 and Legacy Family Tree are the best choices for genealogy programs to create the best looking Website to upload to ideally your own domain name Website. The RootsMagic versions 4 and 5 and Legacy Family Tree and no other genealogy program has the ability to supply the Notes with the Pedigree Charts, Family Group Sheets in a Website.

RootsMagic 6 now have the ability to make the Website with ENDNOTES at the bottom of the Family Group Sheets BUT the Pedigree Charts and Family Group Sheets do not look good now and the version 6 has too many problems to recommend at this time.

To produce the most complete and robust Website that has the best navigation, standard pedigree charts, family groups sheets and notes, you will have to use the conversion program GedHTree which requires that you make a GEDCOM with your genealogy program and then use the GedHTree program. The website that is produced is not quite as attractive as what some of the other major programs can produce and doesn't look as good using Firefox.

WEB HOSTING

To find a place that will do your Web hosting of your Website look at http://www.encinojon.com/isp/

There are several Web sites that offer you Web site space or hosting entirely free. See Free Hosting under Web Hosting at Cyndi's Genealogy Web Site Creation at http://www.cyndislist.com/genealogy-website

See http://www.freehostingcloud.com/

You must research the hosting company's site to determine the security FTP protocol(s) that are supported. The 2 most common are SFTP and FTPS. See the next section.

UPLOADING YOUR HTML TO YOUR WEBSITE USING A SECURE FTP

If you are uploading to or downloading from an external Website hosting server over the Internet, you must choose the correct secure FTP program.

Choose a freeware secure FTP program from the Best Free FTP Client.

The secure program must support the SFTP or FTPS security protocol. The SFTP or FTPS encrypts your password, keeping it secure too. Choose the program that has the same security protocol supported by your Website hosting company.

The top security protocol is FireFTP at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fireftp/ that uses SFTP only with FireFox and with Windows or Mac OS X. It has a 4GB download limit.

The second security protocol is FileZilla at http://filezilla-project.org/index.php that uses SFTP or FTPS with Windows or Mac OS X.

Look at the features at the FTP program's Website.

Find a tutorial for the setup and using the FTP program on the program's Website.

You may do a comparison of many FTP client software at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_FTP_client_software

CHECKING YOUR WEB SITE SECURITY

Change you FTP password every 3 months.

At least every month check the security of your Website files for corruption.

You should check for increases in file sizes in the hosting server.

The larger file sizes might be because links or malware were added in the HTML. You can compare the file sizes in your computer files on the left and the server files on the right.

If you find bigger file sizes, compare the HTML of your computer files with the HTML of the pages on the Internet to see what has been added. Change your FTP password and upload your computer files that will overwrite the corrupted server files.

For extra protection and security you can change the server for the"permissions". See the details about "permissions" at "FTP FILE AND FOLDER PERMISSIONS" at http://www.encinojon.com/comintsec/

SEO - SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION OF YOUR GENEALOGY WEBSITES

SEO - Search Engine Optimization, "is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results." See Search engine optimization and Google's 2 pages Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and the PDF Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.

Google cannot "SEE" anything contained in an IMAGE! You should place alternate text or an "ALT" in the IMG HTML source code.
You should place the text that is shown in the IMAGE in text below the IMAGE that search engines can "SEE" and index.
